Clinical
Trials
There are currently two different clinical trials being conducted in the United
Kingdom using high intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, with the Sonablate
500. Both trials are being conducted on the use of focal therapy treatment
of the prostate using HIFU. For further information regarding either of the
following clinical trials please call +44

1. High Intensity Focused
Ultrasound Focal Ablation of Localised Prostate Cancer
Sponsored by the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation
Objectives: This study seeks to evaluate the patient acceptability, feasibility,
side effect profile and early efficacy of HIFU Focal Ablation in men with organ-confined,
MRI and histologically proven adenocarcinoma of the prostate.
Population: Men between 45-80 years of age with organ-confined, histologically
proven adenocarcinoma of the prostate.
2. Focal HIFU lesion control
in men with non-metastatic progressive prostate cancer
Sponsored by the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Objective: To evaluate the side-effects, PSA kinetics and requirements for
further therapy (including androgen blockade) after index lesion control with
HIFU for progressive non-metastatic prostate cancer at 12 months of follow-up.
Population: Men with a diagnosis of prostate endonocarcinoma with ≤ T3bNoMo
disease on MRI.
