Treatment Customisation

Due to the precision and flexibility of Sonablate HIFU, patients and physicians can decide on a customised treatment plan tailored to their prostate cancer diagnosis.

Standard HIFU Procedure

The standard HIFU procedure with the Sonablate ablates the entire prostate gland. This procedure is the most appropriate choice of HIFU treatment for patients who have organ confined prostate cancer which is not limited to one discrete area of the prostate.

The benefits of a standard HIFU procedure:

  • 92% of patients are successfully treated1
  • Over 99% of men remain continent1
  • 70% of men retain erectile function1
  • Usually a day case
  • Non surgical
  • No radiation
  • The procedure can be repeated as necessary, and does not rule out other treatment options

Focal HIFU

Focal HIFU is an emerging technique for the treatment of prostate cancer where only the tumour is treated instead of the whole prostate gland. By avoiding important structures located around the prostate side-effects could be reduced. It may be suitable for men with low or intermediate risk cancer, who have a single tumour inside the prostate or several tumours all on the same side of the gland.

Benefits of a focal HIFU procedure:

  • Nearly 100% continence2
  • Nearly 100% erectile function2
  • Short procedure time (20-90 minutes)
  • Non surgical
  • No radiation
  • Rapid return to normal life after treatment
  • The procedure can be repeated as necessary, and does not rule out other treatment options

A clinician can determine if a patient is a candidate for the standard or focal Sonablate HIFU procedure.

All medical procedures have risks and benefits; all potential side effects and complications should be discussed with a physician prior to undergoing any procedure. Please see the potential side effects section of the website for a complete list of possible complications from the HIFU procedure.
